On Some Decision Problems for Stateless Deterministic Ordered Restarting Automata

The stateless deterministic ordered restarting automata accept exactly the regular languages, and it is known that the trade-off for turning a stateless deterministic ordered restarting automaton into an equivalent DFA is at least double exponential. Here we present a construction that yields an equivalent NFA of size 2 from a stateless deterministic ordered restarting automaton that works on an alphabet of size n. This yields an upper bound of 2 O(n) for the conversion of a stateless deterministic restarting automaton into an equivalent DFA, which improves the previously known upper bound considerably, meeting the lower bound up to a constant. Based on the new simulation result we then show that many decision problems, like emptiness, inclusion and equivalence, are PSPACE-complete for stateless deterministic ordered restarting automata.
